Mike is one of the first players in the gong world today with an unparalleled body of playing / composing/ teaching experience. This training, will no doubt uplift your gong playing to a whole new level.
GONG EXPLORATIONS – 5-Day Workshop

Exploring touch, tone, and transformation through the art of gong playing.
This five-day immersion offers a comprehensive study of gong technique, tone, rhythm, and awareness. Participants will refine their sound, develop coordination and hand independence , develop their sonic language and deepen listening.
Focus Areas Include:
• Mallet Work & Grip: Pivot grip, movement, and mallet control for precision and expression.
• Strokes & Techniques: Drone, toning, and two-handed strokes; muting, dampening, and hand independence.
• Tone & Dynamics: Sculpting sound, working with directions of change, and exploring dynamics.
• Rhythm & Time: Developing patterns, timing, and long-form rhythmic endurance.
• Listening & Ensemble Work: Attuning to overtones, space, and group interaction.
• Overtones & Friction: Exploring continuous tones, harmonic layers, and textural soundscapes.
Gong Explorations provides a strong foundation in the language of the gong — cultivating technique, control, and musical awareness through deep listening and hands-on exploration.

Composing, shaping, and realizing gong music.
Building on Gong Explorations, this course moves from exploration to creation — guiding participants in organizing sound, shaping form, and developing expressive compositions in a group setting.
Focus Areas Include:
• Compositional Thinking: Organizing tone, rhythm, and texture into form and flow.
• Transitions & Flow: Moving smoothly between strokes, dynamics, themes, parts and sonic moods.
• Group Collaboration: Creating ensemble pieces through conduction, cues, and orchestration.
• Time & Layering: Working with cyclical time, density, and rhythmic relationships.
• Notation & Mapping: Exploring visual and intuitive scoring for gong composition.
• Storytelling & Performance: Shaping narrative and emotion through tone and dynamic design.
Participants will learn to move between intuition and structure, creating intentional, expressive gong works.
