From Technique to Creation

A Three-Day Gong Music Intensive Workshop with Mike Tamburo

This three-day intensive moves through the full arc of gong playing — from the foundational relationship between hand, mallet, and metal, to the open territory of improvisation, composition, and ensemble music-making.

Each day builds on the last. The course moves through three territories: listening and technique — developing sensitivity to tone, resonance, and the subtle ways that touch shapes sound; exploration — improvisation, texture-building, and the discovery of each player’s musical voice; and action — ensemble playing, guided orchestration, spontaneous composition, and the experience of making music together in real time.

The workshop moves quickly but is designed for players of all levels. Beginners will find a clear and accessible entry point. Experienced players will find new depth in familiar ground. The common language throughout is listening.

Our time together will move between practice, guided exploration, and collective playing. There is time to work slowly and time to take risks.

The goal is to leave with a deeper relationship to the instrument — and a clearer sense of how to keep developing on your own.
